Who We Are
The Mercury Disability Board (MDB) was established to implement the terms of the settlement arising from the mercury contamination of the English and Wabigoon river systems, as outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement (1985) and the Mercury Contamination Settlement Act (1986). The Board oversees the administration of the Mercury Disability Fund, ensuring that claims are assessed fairly and that compensation is awarded to eligible individuals based on a point system. In addition, the Board hears appeals concerning denied applications and award levels.
Comprised of seven members, including representatives from affected First Nations and medical professionals, the Board ensures that the Fund is managed with transparency and respect for the communities impacted by mercury poisoning.
Our Mission
The Mercury Disability Board provides assessments to eligible claimants in respectful, consistent and community driven manner.
Our Vision
All eligible claimants receive the compensation the two affected communities are entitled to.
Serving Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong
Grassy Narrows First Nation and Wabaseemoong Independent Nations have been at the heart of the mercury crisis for decades.
The Mercury Disability Board is dedicated to supporting these communities through accessible assessments and fair compensation.
Understanding the Assessment Process
How does the Mercury Disability Board determine compensation?
Fill out an assessment request form (forms for adults & children).
Undergo medical evaluations for overall health and neurological tests.
Receive a point score based on medical findings.
A final decision is made, with appeals available if needed.
This structured process ensures that assessments are thorough and fair, providing necessary support to those impacted by mercury contamination.
