Mercury Disability Board

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility

Members of the Grassy Narrows & Islington Bands, and their affiliated family members, who feel they are experiencing the effects of mercury poisoning from the Wabigoon River, are welcome to apply for a claim.

Grassy Narrows & Islington Band Members are those that live on either Grassy Narrows First Nation (Asubpeeschoseewagong) or Whitedog Independent Nation (Wabaseemoong) as well as band members who live off reserve.

Because the effects of mercury poisoning are generational, blood relatives of Grassy Narrows & Islington Band Members who feel they are affected by mercury poisoning, are also invited to apply.

Applicants that do not hold a Band Number for either Grassy Narrows or Whitedog, will be asked to also fill out the Additional Information Form with their application. This form will be submitted with your application (Assessment Request Form) to your affiliated band for approval before it is returned to the MDB for processing. When your application has been approved you will receive a letter from the MDB stating so, and then MDB staff will make contact with you via phone to begin the next steps, which is the Assessment Process.
