Adult Claims (18 yrs. +)

Established through legislation in 1985, the Mercury Disability Board supports the application and assessment processes used to determine mercury-related claim eligibility connected to the Wabigoon River. The Board’s role is to promote fairness and ensure community‑focused access to necessary health assessments.

If you feel you have been effected by mercury contamination from the Wabigoon River, and you are:

A Band Member or affiliate of GRASSY NARROWS First Nation (Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishinabek) and/or
WABASEEMOONG Independent Nations, you can apply online, or by mail.

Submit paper applications by mail to:

Eligibility for Affiliates:

Unregistered Band Members of The Grassy Narrows & Islington Bands

and affiliates of the Bands,
will also fill out an Additional Information Form.

***Children/Youth (0 – 18 yrs.) Applications: Parents/Guardians will fill out a Representative Form. ***

You will receive a letter in the mail (and/or email) letting you know your application status, approved or not approved.

If your application is approved, the MDB will contact you by phone with next steps.

Approved Applicants:

You and/or your child, will then attend 2 assessments, with a medical professional, specially trained in the effects of mercury, to discuss your overall health, and quality of life.

After all of your assessments are complete, a scoring doctor will receive your file, with your name removed, and assign a score carefully considering your overall health and any additional documents you choose to submit for review.

If your score is more than 6, you will become entitled to benefits. Claimants scoring over 12 (children/youth) or 16 for adults (16yrs+) will receive maximum benefits.

Approved Claim files are then shared for processing with the insurance trust that holds the claim funds for distribution, Canada Life.
